Self-care

As we head into those colder months here in the good old Southern Hemisphere, it’s worth reflecting on how we are all taking care of ourselves.

I’ve been going through some out of balance health, so it’s top of mind for me! I have it in hand but it’s made me think carefully about stress and pressure, and my response to it. How are you doing in this area?

I’m reading an excellent book by Gabor Maté called, ‘When the body says no’ about stress, repression and the link to diseases and illnesses. There’s a poignant quote that jumped out at me:

“We are all self-deniers and self-betrayers to one extent or another.”

We repress stress, we deny what we feel, and what is hurting us. Unfortunately, there’s often a physical cost to that behaviour. Suppressing emotions probably causes the most stress, so it’s an important issue to be aware of folks.

Taking care of ourselves is an investment in our health and wellbeing. We are worth it, not in the L’Oréal way but in a deep, intrinsic human way. It’s important not to let ourselves down.

“Self-care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what’s left of you.”
