The Golden Rule

I’m not a religious person but the quote, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” has always been a favourite of mine.

It’s known as the Golden Rule for good reason, and it encourages reciprocity. It’s an important maxim to keep in mind when interacting with other people on social media.

Whenever I’m writing anything, in the back of my mind is the thought: would I like someone to talk to me the way I’m talking to them? It’s not perfect in execution but it mostly works to prevent any rabid commentary on my part!

When I see extremely negative and personal comments online it perplexes me, as I wonder what the goal is…because it sure isn’t to persuade others of the validity of one’s opinions. Does being combative change people’s minds? I don’t think so.

The arguments that shift my opinions are measured, rational and personally neutral. The ideas themselves are good enough to give me pause, and make me reconsider positions. Something to think about in these complex times.
